Toneheim Folkehøgskole is situated just outside Hamar, 120 km north of Oslo. The schools primary emphasis is music; students are enrolled on the basis of their main instrument.
We offer individual lessons on all orchestral instruments, singing, piano, organ, accordion, guitar, bass and percussion. In addition too individual courses in; musical composition, choir conducting, recording technique and studio work.
Most classes at Toneheim are related to music for example, music theory, harmony, aural training, music history, interpretation, music therapy, sound technique (recording and amplification), jazz improvisation and conducting. In addition we have classes covering subjects such as; physical exercise, Italian literature, media and philosophy. There is a strong emphasis on active musicianship; all students participate in our wide range of ensembles. Amongst others, we can mention the school choir, wind band, brass band, big band, string orchestra and chamber music groups.
Most of our student?s backgrounds are in western classical music or jazz. We recommend that students who are mainly interested in rock music to apply to other schools.
All classes are held in Norwegian, courses in Norwegian, for foreign students are held in Hamar. If, however, we have a number of foreign applicants, a course here at the school will be considered.
The school has 150 students, all attending a one-year course, beginning in August and ending in the middle of May. We have dormitory facilities with a combination of single and double rooms. The minimal age limit for applicants is 18.
We start enrolment on the 1st. of February; applications after this date are also taken into consideration, in accordance with availability. For a number of instruments there is a greater chance to be accepted if the application is received before the 1st of February.
